Alvin Elmo Calhoun was born on December 5, 1960 to the late Walter and Vadie Lou Riser Calhoun. Alvin passed away on Monday, May 3, 2021 in Baton Rouge, LA after a brief illness.
Alvin grew up in the Winn Parish Calvin community where he attended Union Hill Elementary School. His Class of 1978 was among the first to integrate Calvin Schools, where he graduated from Calvin High with honors. Alvin attended Northwestern State and Louisiana State University; he was a life-long student, with a brilliant and curious mind, forever learning and sharing his knowledge. He joined the Union Hill Baptist Church at an early age and continued to support the Church throughout his life.
Alvin held jobs with Goudchauxs/ Maison Blanche and Saia LTL Freight as a young man. But, the most rewarding work came in 1998 when he opened Calhoun Custom Porting and began working for himself.
One of his passions was being The Pit Master and preparing bar-be-que for family reunions and close friends. He won several prizes for his regionally famous bar-be-que. Alvin also enjoyed putting his thoughts on paper and has authored several compositions covering a wide range of subjects and has drawn portraits of family, friends and loved ones. He made his home in Baton Rouge, LA but maintained ties to his childhood hometown and his mothers hometown of Sikes, LA.
Alvin was married to Sandra Green Calhoun. From that union two children were born.
