Bessie W Sanford, a devoted servant of God departed this life on Sunday, June 21, 2020. She was born on November 9, 1931 in Greensburg, Louisiana to the union of Green Womack, Sr. and Annie Pound Womack. At an early age, Bessie accepted Christ as her personal Savior and with her family attended Venable Chapel A.M.E. Church in Greensburg. After relocating to Baton Rouge, she became an actively devoted member of Bethel AME Church, where she served on the Steward Board, Matrons Guild, Chancel Choir, Scott-Gilchrist-Moran Quality of Life Center, the Orah N. Evans Womens Missionary Society and the Bethel Bunch. Bessie chaired and served on several committees, helping wherever she could.
Following graduation from St. Helena High School, Bessie attended business school in Baton Rouge. Her first job was as a secretary in the Political Science Department at Southern University. Bessie later joined the staff at State Industrial School (Jetson Center for Youth), where she worked in purchasing. Because of her exceptional skillset, she promoted to supervisor of purchasing for correctional institutions for the state. During Bessies employment with the State of Louisiana, she received distinguished honors in the field of Governmental Purchasing. She gained praise and recognition from Louisiana Department of Civil Service, the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Incorporated, the State of Louisiana Executive Department, and the State of Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, where she worked for 30 years.
Bessie, affectionately known as MoMo, married Johnny Sanford, and to this union two children were born. She showed unconditional love to her children until God brought her home. Bessie loved spending time with family and her favorite pastime was playing spades. Bessie, her brothers and friends would spend hours playing.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Paul, Ray, I.W., Walter, A.C., John, Isaac, Charlie, Nezzie, Leon and Green Jr. and sisters Christine, Reva McIntyre, Bertha Montgomery and Mary Shipp. She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Myrna Rowley (Larry) and Ronald Sanford (Veronica), two grandsons Yrral and Marcus Rowley, three great grandsons Dylan Banks, Alijah and Marcus Rowley Jr., great granddaughter Amyra Rowley, devoted niece and nephew Debra Womack and Kevin Womack, godchild Charleen Hunter of Houston Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
