Carrie Corey affectionately know as "Madear" by all those whose lives she touched. Madear was 88 at the time of her passing. On the morning of September 17th she passed with peace and grace at her home with her children. Madear was a homemaker and widow of Doherty Corey, they shared 37 years of marriage.
Madear was born in Hope Villa, Louisiana on January 15, 1931. She was the daughter of Willie Scott and Katie Lilly. She was the youngest of 8 children.
Madear spent her childhood in Hope Villa and at the young age of 12 she gave her life to the Lord. Madear was baptized at Zion Travel by the late Rev.Eddie Johnson. Madear later had 2 children, Betty and Arthur. They also spent
their childhood years in Hope Villa,LA until moving to Baton Rouge at the ages of 8 and 9.
She made her home on 45th street an area known as "The Park". She made a home together with her husband Doherty, her 2 children and 1 sister. She attended Mount Hermon Baptist Church until she later found the late Rev. Johnson who had baptized her when she was 12. In her excitement she moved her membership to New Galilee Baptist Church where Rev. Johnson was pastor. She grew into the title of Madear during her time in the Park. She became a mother to those in the community. Many have come forth in the time of her sickness and her passing to speak about the things she did for them.
Madear was a believer in helping others. She did many things for others that she never spoke about. She was an example of the love of God that she showed to everyone. She took care of children that were not hers, she loved them.
Simply put, Madear was an example for us to follow. She was an amazing mother and offered her children the very best she could. Madear and Aunt Lilly, who was like a second mother to Betty and Nick, sacrificed in ways that still play out in the lives of Madear's children, grand children and great grand children.
Madear was a faithful servant of the Lord. She loved her church and her Pastor. She was known for her love and care for others. Her life is a life to be honored. She will forever be remembered in our hearts.
Madear was preceded in death by her husband Doherty Corey, her father Willie Scott and Mother Katie Lilly. Two Brothers, 4 Sisters and 1 Grandchild.
