Derek Jamal Turner, passed away March 15, 2021 at the age of 35. He was born on November 4, 1985 to the union of Carol Smith Turner and the late Gary L. Turner Sr. He was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, La. Derek was baptized at Greater St. James Baptist by the late Rev. Dr. Willie M. Finister, where he remained a member until his passing. He was a 2003 graduate of McKinley Sr. High School and employed with Brace Industrial Group as a Scaffold Builder. Derek was an avid gamer, wrestling and Lakers fan. Derek was an all-around good dude who made the world a much more interesting place simply by existing in it. He will be missed but absolutely never forgotten. He leaves to cherish his loving memories his mother, Carol S. Turner; one brother, Gary L. (Amy) Turner Jr. of Elizabethtown, KY; one sister, Latosha (Eric) Gordon; four nieces, Taija, Briana and Aaija Turner and Aeriana Gordon ; three nephews, Gary L. Turner III, Jayden and Caleb Turner both of Elizabethtown, KY; six aunts, Marilyn Smith, Cherry (Ensley) Joseph, Deloris (Jimmy) Young, Sharron (John) Barrow, Susan Johnson and Lucille Ann Baldwin ; seven uncles, James Smith Sr., Emile (Shell) Turner; Willie Young, Ricky Reed, David (Shirley) Wade, Kerry Reed and Donald (Karla) Newport of Atlanta Ga. Other relatives and friends. Derek was preceded in death by his father Gary L. Turner Sr., maternal grandparents, Corinne Smith and Charlie Smith, paternal grandparents, Emile C. Turner Sr. and Lou Emma Turner, three aunts, Gwendolyn Smith, Shelia N. White and Sylvia Turner, one uncle, Gordon Turner, other relatives and friends.
