But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15 (NKJV) If ever there was a woman who epitomized a life of service, it was Dorothy Mae Wilson Bell. She was an inspiration and dedicated believer, wife, mother, and friend, as well as a social justice warrior. Sis. Bell served the Lord, her family, her friends, and her community with diligence and integrity. Dorothy Mae Wilson was gifted to this world on March 17, 1946; to Weda Stevenson Wilson and Milton Wilson, Sr. Born in Independence, LA (Tangipahoa Parish), she was one of eight children. Her childhood and adolescence years were spent in Hammond, LA where she was a proud graduate of Greenville Park High School. Dorothy continued her education, attending business school and eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from Southern University at Baton Rouge. After college graduation, she taught school in Point Coupee Parish before beginning an illustrious career in law enforcement. She took her place in history as one of two first black women of the Baton Rouge Police Department. Her career ended when she retired as a supervisor with the Louisiana Department of Probation and Parole. Her professional life was devoted to serving her community and blazing a trail for strong women to follow in her footsteps. Dorothy's legacy is not limited to her professional accolades. Married to the love of her life Freddie Bell, Jr. for over 50 years, Dorothy personified the role of wife and mother. It was rare to see Dorothy without Freddie. Two beautiful women were reared by this union: Anitra and Phaedra. Both daughters carry on Dorothys tradition of strong family values and public service. Even their personal hobbies are similar. Dorothy was supremely health-conscious, loved exercise, and enjoyed reading and shopping. She had exquisite taste and always carried herself with class. In addition to being a social advocate, an amazing wife and an exceptional mother, Dorothys greatest feat was sharing the love of Jesus Christ with all she encountered. Dorothy was baptized at an early age into the Christian faith as a member of the Church of God in Christ. She took Gods call seriously and ministered to the poor at Nazarene Church of God in Christ. Eventually, Dorothy united with Bethany World Prayer Center, where she served as a cell leader. A faithful tither, Dorothy believed the heart of her faith was giving. One of her greatest moments was taking a pilgrimage to Israel. If ever there was a child who loved Jesus, Dorothy did. Dorothy's memory will be cherished by all who encountered her, but especially by her immediate family. Left in the light of her sun, is her husband, Freddie Bell, Jr.; her daughters, Anitra (Manya) Robinson and Phaedra (Jermaine) Early; her brothers: Milton "June" Wilson, Jr., Jessie (Dorothy) Wilson, and Curtis (Irma) Wilson, Sr.; her sisters: Pearl (Houston) Torrince, Lubertha W. Omotoyo, and Edna Jeanpierre; brother-in-law, Clarence Williams; and her grandchildren, Mason Bell and Mallory Robinson. She also leaves a host of relatives and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; Milton Wilson, Sr. and Weda Stevenson Wilson and her sister, Easter Williams. "Talk About A Child Who Do Love Jesus, Here's One Here's One."
