Garry Nelson was born in Reserve, Louisiana on May 29, 1956 to the union of Dorothy and Lucious Nelson, Sr. He was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 26, 2018 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a graduate of Leon Godchaux High School in Reserve, Louisiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a tactical wire operations specialist. While enlisted, he earned a sharpshooter badge with M-16 rifle and an expert badge with hand grenade. He was honorably discharged at Fort Jackson, SC in 1981. Garry lived with God's favor as he battled cancer for twenty years. In 1999, Garry was stricken with a critical illness. While under doctors' care for the critical illness, Garry coded three times but was saved after the promise he made to God. After partly recovering from his illness, he often mentioned talking to God and has instilled in his children the importance of education and continuing to better themselves. Garry had kept his promise to God giving him in return, God's favor.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Keva Nelson; five children: Felicia (Robert Jr.) Miller, Garrissa, Kamal, and Gabela Nelson; step son Kerry (Quionnesha) Levarity. One sister: Shirley Scott, Five brothers: Lucious Jr., Willie, Melvin, Donald, and Alfred Nelson. Seven grandchildren: Jasmine, Robert III, Charese, Chariya, Amari, and two step grandsons, Marcus and Khalil; one great granddaughter: Lailah. Two aunts: Doroth Smith and Grace Nelson. One uncle: James Nelson, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Mae and Lucious Nelson Sr. and two brothers, Herbert Scott and Raymond Nelson.
