Geneva Slaughter-Williams was born on September 26, 1924 in Patoutville, Louisiana to the union of Cornelius and Ellen Alexander Slaughter. Geneva was raised and nurtured in a home with six other siblings. She was affectionately known as Ma Gen, Aunt Gen, Ginny, or Tee-Tee. Geneva and her older sister, Martha, moved to New Orleans to seek employment. She was a faithful member of Greater St. Stephens Baptist Church before later joining St. Raymond Catholic Church and then St. Anthonys Church. Geneva relocated from New Orleans to Lafayette following Hurricane Katrina to live with her loving sister, Shirley Young.
Geneva was honored Employee of the Month several times for her excellent nursing service. Through her quiet unassuming way, she acquired a reputation for excellence. She was described as always cheerful, completing her work and seeking to help others. Geneva was dependable, responsible and always had a smile and kind word. When she retired from nursing service after 20 years, she continued to serve others through her dedication to a family in their home. That family remembers and loves her to this day.
Friends and family from New Orleans to Lafayette knew of Genevas famous coconut cake. With her superb cooking abilities, she easily could have had a restaurant. In her leisure time, she enjoyed cooking, reading, and working in her garden.
Geneva is survived by the joy of her life, one daughter, Helen Ruiz of New Orleans; three play daughters: Freida Brown of Baton Rouge, Myra Menville and Marie Bookman of New Orleans; three sisters-in-law: Genevieve Slaughter and Phelma Slaughter of Patoutville and Lou Myrtle of Jeanerette; 3 special "grandsons" Chris, Westley, and Matthew Ancira, as well as a host of precious nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Albert Williams, parents Ellen and Cornelius Slaughter, Sr.; precious grandmother Martha Slaughter; four brothers, Irving Slaughter, Sr., Cornelius Slaughter, Jr., Morris Slaughter and DJ Slaughter; two sisters Martha Lyle and Shirley Young; and two brothers-in-law Richard Lyle and Roy Young, Sr.
Though gone from our presence, never from our hearts.
