Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91:1 NIV
Harriett "Red" La Rue Oby Mack, entered into eternal peace when God called her by name from her earthly dwelling. Harriett was born on December 15, 1937, a daughter of the late Kernan and Etta Oby. She was a graduate of McKinley Senior High School and Southern University. For over thirty-five years Harriett served as an educator with East Baton Rouge Parish School Board touching the lives of many.
Harriett, Miss Oby, Auntie Red, and Red were names that she was most affectionately called. Red had a bubbly personality and could keep you in stitches when she was in one of her comical moods; and yet, she was a person who loved her quiet and solace time. It was during those times that she enjoyed watching television, reading her Bible and tinkering with various crafts: sewing, beading, painting, etc. For many years she coordinated weddings, made corsages and used her God given talents and skills to make others feel happy on special occasions, often on a very limited budget.
Upon hearing of Red's passing, a former student shared with the family, "I remember when I was a little girl and Miss Oby bought me my first dressy dress." This was only one of the many acts of kindness Red rendered to people. Red made the BEST pecan candy in the world. She had a system, coupled with her left hand and a whole lot of patience for making it creamy and tasty. When family came to town, they were guaranteed a batch. Even with her recipe, no one could make it taste quite like hers. She loved doing this and it gave her joy to know that she had made someone else happy.
Red accepted Christ at an early age and built upon that foundation as she journeyed with him down through the years. She was never shy about telling others of the power of God's amazing grace. Her foundation Christian foundation began at Hollywood Baptist Church, and completed its circle at Greater Sixty-Aid Baptist Church. Here she sang in the choir and worked on various committees. She loved her church and would often share sermon tapes with family members.
Red was blessed with an abundance of wisdom and recall for family history facts. She was one of those people who could remember the date, time, and place of an event that had taken place well beyond its years. She used this skill as a resource as she worked on numerous church events.
Red was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Mack; her parents, Kernan and Etta Oby; brother, Ernest Oby; and sister, Thelma O. Reed.
Red is survived by 3 siblings, sister, Theresa Henry of Sacramento, CA; Veoletta Trice (Chuck), )Louisville, Kentucky; and Charles Oby, (Baton Rouge, LA); Sister-in-law, Joann Oby, a special friend, John Emanuel, God-daughter, Janice Elaine Sterling, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
