Obituary

Celebration of Life and Legacy of Louise Shelmire Manogin "For I am ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." II Timothy 4:6-7 Three Scores and Eighteen years ago, Louise, the seventh of eight children was born February 20, 1943 to Leola Jiles Shelmire and John B. Shelmire in East Baton Rouge, a town called Scotlandville, Louisiana. Louise answered the Macedonia call from her labor on earth to her promised eternal home Monday, August 2, 2021, at University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Realizing that her walk on earth was only a temporary one, Louise began her preparation for her permanent heavenly home, and she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized by the late Reverend F. Kelly at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, of Scotlandville. She remained faithful to Mount Zion Baptist Church throughout her childhood and adulthood, attending Sunday School and Worship services. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Senior Choir and participated in other activities of the church. Louise, affectionally called "Babysis," attended elementary and high school in the Scotlandville community. She graduated from Scotlandville Senior High School on May 31, 1961. She attended Southern University and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in May 1965. She eventually received her Masters in Administration and Supervision. Louise taught business classes for over 30 years and retired from the LCTCS System in 1994. She continued to teach and volunteer her services at the Jewel B. Newman Community Center in which she taught computer classes to Seniors. Louise married James Ray Manogin, Sr. on August 3, 1963. With this union, two amazing kids were born. Charissa Manogin-Duncan (Arthur), and James Ray Manogin, II (McShannon). Their children grew up to be fine, educated, and respectful children. Louise was a lifetime member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She was Treasurer for many years. She also was part of the Debonairs Civic and Social Club, and Scotlandville Alumni Association and Class of 1961 in which she was actively involved. Louise exhibited a welcoming spirit. She helped everyone she could in any way possible. She was someone that people seemed to draw to. She was dependable, and a person that could be count on in time of need. She was a team player, willing to work (within reason) with anyone on an individual basis and in a group setting. She was committed to the tasks at hand. Her pride and joy were her family on which she joyfully boasted, giving glory to the Almighty God. Louise and James were married for fifty-five years, only to be separated by the Hand of God, two and a half years ago, February 18, 2019. Louise leaves to cherish her memories, two loving and devoted children: one daughter, Charissa Lynette Manogin-Duncan (Arthur), Baker, LA and one son, James Ray Manogin, II (McShannon), Prairieville, LA; five grandchildren: Malik Ray (Trey) Manogin , Channing Raylen and Chynna Lynae Duncan; Jayden James, and Jaylah Raelyn Manogin; one sister, Delores Shelmire-Montague, Baton Rouge, LA; one brother, Jessie Shelmire of Sacramento, California, four sisters-in-law, Katherine Crayton-Shelmire of Alexandria, LA, Esther Manogin, Greensburg, NC, Martha Manogin, Willie Sue Manogin-White, (Joseph), Nelsene M. Peters (Ferman) all of Baton Rouge, LA, one brother in law, Charles Ray Manogin, Sr. Baton Rouge, LA, one god daughter, Angela Parker, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends. Louise was preceded in death by her parents John B and Leola Jiles Shemire, husband, James Ray Manogin Sr., four brothers, John "Booster" Franklin, Leon Shelmire, Sr., Joseph F. Shelmire, Sr., and Alfred Shelmire Sr., one sister, Marie Shelmire Causey. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Louise S. Manogin, please visit our floral store.
