Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Joseph was born on August 16, 1941, enter eternal rest August 25, 2020; the daughter of the late Dr. Harrison and Mrs. Beatrice Joseph. She attended primary and high school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana., earning a license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She was married to the late, Alvin Sims, and gave birth to a daughter, the late Aux-Vasse Simms. Thereafter she had a son, the late Leon Jones. As she continued to work in the nursing field, she decided to attend the Louisiana Fire Fighting School. She became the first Black female Louisiana Firefighter. Due to injuries incurred on the job, she enrolled in Southern University and A & M College where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fine Arts. Mary was dedicated in being a servant to the community. She ran for an unsuccessful race as a City Councilperson for District 10. Being a champion of Education, she returned to Southern University to study Education and Public Administration, obtaining a Masters Degree in Education with her daughter. Mary was devoted to her family as she worked in the medical field and took care of her mother and daughter who had a long term illness. She was known for her compassion to help others and treasured holidays with her family and friends in Baton Rouge and Columbus, Ohio. Mary was proceded in death by her parents, Dr. Harrison and Mrs. Beatrice Joseph; Aux-Vasse Juanita Simms (daughter), Leon Jones, V(son), and Harrison C. Joseph (brother). Survived by her grandchildren, Janita Cole, Juanita, Jerita and Leon Jones, VI, of Charlotte, NC; Britney and Denita Jones of Baton Rouge, LA; Daughter-in-law, Johnnie Jones; Sister-in-law, Sandra K. Joseph of Columbus, OH; nephews; Harrison Joseph(Cynthia) Dr. Joshua (Reversa) Joseph; nieces; Dr. Monique (Bhekumuzi) Khumalo, and Katheryn Joseph of Columbus, Ohio; 19 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a host of great nephews, nieces and dearest friends Lola Levy of Baton Rouge and Mary Adams Thomas of New Orleans.
