Our precious Angel, Mary Alyce Smalley, more affectionately known as 'Auntie May', 'Ms. Mary', 'Momma Mary', and, in her later years, 'Grandmother', passed away on May 20, 2020 at her home after a long illness. She was 68 years young.
Mary was born in Baton Rouge, LA. on May 10, 1952, daughter of the late Sam (Willie) and Hannah Lee Jones. She is survived by her sons, Troy and Trevor Young, her daughter-in-law's Chelsey and Habeeba, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; her brother, Donald Ray Hollis; three sisters, Linda Schexnayder and her husband Michael Schexnayder, Betty Thompson, Barbara Bonier and her husband Garland Bonier, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary worked for the Louisiana State Department for many years before relocating in 1985 with her sons to Decatur GA. There, she secured employment at the prestigious Atlanta University Center Consortium, located at Clark Atlanta University, the largest contiguous consortium of African Americans in higher education in the United States. The center consists of four historically black colleges and universities in southwest Atlanta, Georgia. She served as an Administrative Assistant for over 25yrs in the Center's Dual Degree Engineering Program and was an integral part of the program's success. In recognition of her dedication to the program and the success of the students, the 'Mary Smalley Cummins Centers of Excellence Award', which recognizes academic success, leadership and community involvement, was created and named in her honor.
Mary, a devout Christian, was a parishioner of Rosehill Church, ministered by Pastor Donaldson. Mary was a proud mother and collector of many things; clowns and black art were among her favorites.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Lillie Rose Dotson, and two brothers, Larry Eubanks, and Ronnie Eubanks.
