The Obituary of Michael Ray Davis "Soul Brother # 1" Michael Ray entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at the home of his favorite auntie, Lizzie Hawkins, in Zachary, Louisiana. He was born on April 18, 1957 to the late Hattie Davis Slaughter in Independence, Louisiana. Michael was raised by both his mother and late grandmother, Rosa H. Powell in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Soul Brother #1 accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Bethany Church by Pastor Larry Stockstill as a young adult. For the last ten plus years he attended Second Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Leo Cyrus and Rev. Kendall Fealing. Michael educational career started at Scott Elementary School. He completed his education in the East Baton Rouge Parish Schools Special Education System. Soul Brother #1 received workforce training through Mohican Education Center and Evergreen Life Services in Minden, Louisiana. Soul Brother # 1 was not a stranger to anyone. He loved people and people loved him too. His favorite pastime things to do was playing cards with family members, coloring, feeding his Birds and watching a flock of birds having a wedding, going on rides and traveling. It did not matter how far you had to travel he would ride with you. He did not talk much on the trips because he was busy taking in the different sceneries around him and mapping his way from and to his home. Although he did not drive, he could tell you how to get to New Orleans and back to his house without getting you lost. If a family member was giving Michael a ride home from work and asked him how to get to his house and he was not ready to go home he would purposely tell them the wrong way so he could ride a little longer. Michael favorite foods included red beans and rice, cornbread dressing, fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, chocolate cakes, cereals and ice cream. He likes to go out to eat but preferred to eat SOUL FOOD at home. When mealtime was over, Michael wanted a good cup of coffee. Michael favorite TV shows included "The Price is Right", "Family Feud," "All Love Movies," BET Channel and going to the movies. He would often say, "Coffee is good to the last drop", "Dont worry, Be Happy," "Im an Aries, I dont worry nobody," "I am telling the truth, I cant cook," "Praise the Lord," "God is Good. All the time, God is Good." Michael worked as a custodian for a short period of time at Community Meat Market, and Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. He was most proud of being a devoted and dedicated custodian worker for the last 27 years at Taco Bell on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He leaves to cherish his memories: two sisters, Rose Davis Williams (Weston) of Harvey, Louisiana, and Tracie Pauline Davis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and one brother, Leroy Davis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; four aunts: Lizzie H. Hawkins (Michael) of Zachary, Louisiana, Mattie M. Mercelous of Lawton, Oklahoma, Verna M. Coleman of Miami, Florida and Delores Davis of Detroit, Michigan; and five uncles: Clovis Hayes, Lionel Hayes, Sr. (Sharon), Lawrence Bryant-Powell, Horace Hayes, and Clovers Hayes (Regina) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He is also survived by a host of other relatives, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Michael Ray fondly called "Soul Brother #1", "CoCo Bell", and "Gus" is proceeded in death by his mother, Hattie Davis Slaughter; grandmother, Rosa H. Powell; grandfather, Leroy Davis, Sr.; niece, April Becnel Coulon, an infant nephew, maternal great grandparents, Clara and Granville Hayes, Sr.; paternal great grandmother, Savannah Robins Davis; uncle, Leroy Davis, Jr., and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins. The family would like to thank Volunteers of America Supported Living Program for 25 plus years of services provided to Michael, especially, Helen Millsap, Terry Goodman, Vanessa Hickman, Vereace Brown, Kim Stringer, and Shanika Hamp. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation (masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed) on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 17, 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Winnfield Funeral Home of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am in the chapel. There will also be a live stream option on Saturday, April 17, 2021.
