Obituary

Sister Phebia Boatner Veals lived out her Christian faith as a faithful wife, devoted mother, loyal friend, and committed servant. Phebia Boatner Veals peacefully left this earth on Monday, July 23, 2018 . She was surrounded by her loving family and friends until her death. Phebia born the fourth child to the late Hannibal and Addie Boatner, on April 13, 1938 in Clinton, LA. At an early age, Phebia accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Phebia graduated from Southern University where she received her Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education in 1959 and completed her Masters of Science in Education as well. She was employed as a health and physical education teacher with the West and East Baton Rouge Parish School Board for over 30 years. Phebia influenced countless students through her diligent work and nurturing. Anyone who knew Phebia is immediately enveloped by her calm, caring, peaceful, strong and wise demeanor. She was someone who you can count on in a time of need. She affectionately loved and helped so many family members, friends, church members, and youth. She loved attending Southern University games and was a long-standing season ticket holder. She also loved to have fun, laugh, music and had an infectious smile. To know her was to love her and to love her was to experience unconditional love. Phebia met and married Willie E. Veals and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. To this union three beautiful children were born, Darius Veals, Monica Washington, and Kenyatta McKie. She was a faithful member of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary B.C. from 1974 until her death. She served on various committees and organizations. Phebia was an active member of her church serving faithfully as treasurer of the Usher board, Deaconess Board, Youth Sunday School teacher, Youth Vacation Bible School teacher and because of her caring nature and diligent service, she was appointed Mother of the Church in 2005 and held the position until her passing. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Saddened by her departure, yet thankful for fond and cherished memories of her are: her loving husband, Wille E. Veals, one son, Darius A. (Leicha) Veals of Baton Rouge, LA, two daughters Monica R. (Curtis) Washington of Baton Rouge, LA and Kenyatta V. (Marcus) McKie of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She is the loving grandmother of nine (9) grandchildren Darius Veals Jr., Christian Washington, Devante Veals, Mariah Washington, Donovan Veals, Milan McKie, Marcus McKie II, Micah McKie, and Malakai McKie, one sister Mary (Henry) Jones of Clinton, LA, one brother Robert (Estelle) Boatner of Baton Rouge, LA, and a sister-in-law Dorothy Knighten Boatner of Baton Rouge, LA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her father and mother, Hannibal and Addie Boatner, aunt Christeen Stewart Selders, two brothers, John "Edward" and Woodrow "Johnny" Boatner, two sisters, Sadie Boatner and Carrie Lue Harrel.
