Rosetta "Rosie" Porter, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, departed this life, surrounded by her family on October 29, 2017. She was 93 years old.
Rosetta is survived by her nephew Arcell (Lucille) Bland and family of New Orleans, LA, her step-daughters, Delores Porter of Chicago, IL and Geraldine (John) Seymore of New Orleans, LA; her nine grandchildren; her fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Porter, affectionately called "Honey" of Baton Rouge, LA; her God-son, Karl Bland of Baton Rouge, LA; her God-daughter, Alice McClain of Baton Rouge, LA; her parents, Frank and Evelyn Whitsey of Newton, MS, and her siblings, Noah Whitsey, Katie Bland, Grace Whitsey, Sylvia Whitsey, Gertrude Whitsey, Fred Whitsey, Ruby Whitsey, Velma Whitsey, Mattie Whitsey and Minnie Whitsey.
Rosetta was born on June 26, 1924 in Newton, MS to the late Frank and Evelyn Whitsey. Rosetta spent her earlier years in Newton, MS and at the age of 13, she moved to Bogalusa, LA to live with her older sister and her husband, Katie and Rudolph Bland, who raised and cared for her. Rosetta remained in Bogalusa, LA until she met the love of her life, Bennie Porter. The two were married March 14, 1953 and she relocated to Baton Rouge, LA. Bennie served in the U.S. Army and later worked as a truck driver and Rosetta worked as a salesperson at Maison Blanche for twenty-nine years. After the death of her husband in 1988, she retired and dedicated her remaining time to her family and church. Rosetta served on various boards at her church. Rosetta and Bennie became faithful members of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in 1953 under the leadership of C.N. Morris until his death and presently under the leadership of Charlie Green Jr.
A funeral is scheduled at 11:00 a. m., Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. A viewing is scheduled from 9 a.m. until service time. Rev. Charlie Green, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rosetta's life.
