Obituary

Sherwood "Wood" Richard was born May 5, 1951 in Wisner, Louisiana to Mr. Sam and Mrs. Ethel Lee Richard. Apart of an extensive family village, Sherwood also fell under the guidance and divine Christian leadership of his maternal grandparents, Mr. George and Mrs. Cornelia Price. The fourth of seven children, Sherwood was a typical middle childgregarious, independent, and uninhibited. A fervent lover of sports, he spent much of his young years honing his baseball skills while also nurturing a deep-seated love for football, particularly the New Orleans Saints! Sherwood attended Wisner-Gilbert High School in the latter 1960s. As a young adult, Sherwood relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Instilled with an exceptional work ethic, he began his career as a professional truck driver for Saia LTL Freight where he tirelessly and loyally worked for more than 25 years. His remarkable career, which later included Central Freight Lines, fostered a reputation marked by dependability, hard work, and of course Sherwoods infamous candor. In 1974, Sherwood met and began pursuing Miss Lela McGehee. Two years later, on May 8, 1976, he and Lela joined hands in holy matrimony. To this union two sons were bornBernard and Brandon. Sherwoods identity as a father is one he held in great esteem. He reveled in facilitating his sons love for and competence in sports, while also grooming them into respectful, resilient, agile young men. Sherwood was known to urge one to prepare for the "competition" in sports and life! That is what he sought to teach his sons! Sherwood and Lela remained married for 20 years. In 1985, Sherwood joined Gloryland Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. John D. Lands. He faithfully served on the Usher Board. Sherwood lived much of his adult life on Reverie Ave., a street populated with neighbors who became his lifelong friends. In fact, he considered them familypeople on whom he could depend and with whom he enjoyed hanging out, watching sports, and on occasion grilling a slab of ribs. It is true Sherwoods presence and personality will be missed by all whose path he graciously crossed. On August 19, 2021, Sherwood transitioned to his Heavenly Fathers awaiting arms. He was preceded in death by his devoted grandparents and parents; and three brothers, Riley Richard, Jessie Wilford, and Russell Lee Richard. Sherwood is survived by his two sons, Bernard of Dallas, Texas, and Brandon (Alexius) of Wylie, Texas; former wife and lifelong friend, Lela McGehee Richard of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one brother, Emmett George (Carol) of Heartland, Texas; two sisters, Nelie Richard of Monroe, Louisiana, and Charlotte Thomas (Ricky) of Houston, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Amie Richard of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Brenda Wilford of Wisner, Louisiana; and a host of relatives and friends.
