Dr. Walter Doddridge Cooke was born to the union of the late Walter Reuben and Francis Iola Cooke, January 7, 1947 in St. Johns, Antigua, W.I. and departed this life July 29, 2019.
Walter moved to the states in 1968 at the age of 21. He married Paula Pinkard in 1973, and to this union a son was born. He later married Patricia Bailey in 1987, and to this union a daughter and a son were born.
Walter attended Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama and receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1978. Because of his love for animals, Walter accepted a position as a professor at Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge in 1980 where he taught Animal Science. Walter also taught an Animal Science course at Louisiana State University. In 1987, Walter, with his family returned to St. Johns, Antigua and established an animal clinic. There he cared for many of the island's pets and livestock until accepting a supervisory position with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS); providing more than 20 years service until retirement in 2010.
Walter leaves to cherish his loving memories, a beloved ex-wife and caregiver for nearly 10 years, Patricia Cooke of Baton Rouge, LA; a son, Kwame Cooke of Fairfax, VA; a daughter, Kamaria Cooke of Marietta, GA; a brother, John Cooke of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Jeannette Cooke-Joseph of St. Johns, Antigua; a stepdaughter, Derronica Dukes of Marietta, GA; a stepson, Brandon Bailey of Baton Rouge, LA; six grandchildren, Zavier, Layla, Ajalyn, Jordan, Braylon, Brandon Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Iola Cooke; a son, William Cooke; a brother, Kennedy Cooke; and four sisters, Enid Goodwin, Cyrilla Cooke, Roberta Mitchell and Cynthia Cooke
