John Ard Prophet was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Gurley Houston-Prophet on July 7, 1941 in Wilson, Louisiana. He peacefully departed this life on Monday, January 4, 2021 at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 79. Visitation at Winnfield Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, 7221 Plank Road, from 10:00 a.m. until religious services at 12:00 noon. Interment in Port Hudson National Cemetery.
John Prophet accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Reverend John Wilson at Galilee Baptist Church in Clinton, Louisiana. He was a graduate of West High School in Jackson, Louisiana. He joined the United States Army and served in Vietnam as a Marksman. He returned home from his military duties and married Hilda Wright. Of this union, one child was born, Andrea Prophet Jones.
John worked for many years for Southland Cooperation conducting petroleum and sign maintenance. Eventually he formed his own company, John’s Petroleum and Sign Maintenance Cooperation. He spent years doing contract work for all regional Circle K and Cracker Barrel stores. He was forced into retirement when he suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm in June of 1996. Although he suffered this debilitating illness, he continued to live a full life. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching his Dallas Cowboys and westerns.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Prophet, Sr., Mother, Gurley Houston-Prophet, his brothers, Charles Jr., George, Willie, Stanley, Louis, Straughter and his sister Dorothy Prophet Simpson.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Andrea Prophet Jones, his ex-wife, Hilda Wright Prophet, his sisters, Irma Lowery and Mattie Harvey (Lewis, Jr.), his nieces, Ferry Simpson-Hall, Xanthia P. Harkness and Angelique Dorsey-White (Mike); his nephews, Cedrick and Roderick Harvey and his grandson, Kenneth Jones, Jr.
